Off topic, but important as it affects my ability to participate here...
Hmmm...An analogy may help convey my issue without giving any info to potential enemies.
My "castle" is being invaded by "vikings" who have managed to at least partially navigate into and across my "security" moat. With the assistance of some "peddlers", I have managed to identify over 100 individuals who are of low to moderate security risk to the integrity of my "castle". However, when I try to purchase their "wares" which will clean out the moat, kill the invaders, and beef up my security, there is always another viking straggler who "pops up" out of no where to block my way. I have cut off all food and water supply to the enemy, but they still have some secret means of communication. The "security wares" I wish to buy are only available through the internet, so I'm at a loss...Any suggestions??? Thanks!!!
PS No, I have NOT lost my marbles!

SK, If you use a PC, download and install the free Microsoft Security Essentials from here: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
That program should take care of your anti-virus needs, assuming that's your cryptic message meant..
Good luck, -benthos |

I too have just gotten infected by computer viruses and everything runs slow, when it will launch. In the system32 folder I have McAfee warnings, a couple of Trojans, in services.exe and I get a warning for spm/lx, also a spyware alert, security warning, for worm.Win32.NetSky, recommending that it is necessary to perform a full system scan, it says to click OK, I suspect that its a scam. Word reacts slow and paint and notepad wont launch at all. Everything is slow. McAfee identifies a buffer overrun. I have installed Security Essentials. A little popup box id ing itself as part of Microsoft Security essentials, on the lower right part of the screen, says to click to ‘Clean Computer’, I don’t know whether to trust it or not.

oldtimer, if you mean the small red-bordered box that pops an alert, yes, it is the Essentials box and can be trusted.
You can disable McAfee or other anti-viruses and run a full scan of your puter and choose to clean any viruses/trojans it identifies.
To analyze why the machine is slow, press the Ctrl-Alt-Delete keys to load Task Manager to see the resources on your machine, and see if the CPU is pegged at a high value in the running graph or if you're running low on RAM. That might help you decide on further steps to speed up your machine. |

| Task Manager won't launch. I get a pop-up that says it has been disabled by the Administrator. That makes no sense, its a home computer and I and the administrater are the same thing. I dont even know how to disable it. I have used it many times before. |

Thanks for all of the good advice! I have learned alot over the past week.
I ended up running Spyware Doctor's free scan which identified 171 infections including a significant Trojan Horse and virus. I researched the antiviral software and chose to buy their product. Within minutes my computer was running faster than it has in a long time, and I could access many things that I was having trouble with before. Several of the specific infections that my computer had required more than could easily be done for free. Now I just have to stay on top of things security-wise!
