I was startled to awake in the wee hours today to find that I had wet myself. This happened once earlier a few months ago. It is unnerving. I just read a couple of posts from Marjorie and realize this may be a symptom of Ataxia. I know this may be embarassing for you to affirm, but have others too faced bed-weting issues? Is it common? I read this could also be a result of depression.
I realize that I had some bladder pressure and also drank a glass of water before going to bed, and took my B-complex and B12. Also, I felt a little extra ataxic during the day. The last time too I had taken my supplements just before bed. The lesson learned is that I should empty my bladder before bed.
Do you guys do any exercises for this?

Sentient, If you are a older male you might be having prostate problems. I am a male 69 and been having prostate problems for several years and recently started taking Super Beta Prostate made from plant sterols so it is all natural. Check it out. |

Sentient, It's an embarrassing condition, but I've come to look at the bladder more globally, like the throat--increased sensitivity. I haven't had bed-wetting issues yet, but I sense they are coming. I don't know if it's increasing age (61), Ataxia and I have NO evidence, but I've noticed increased bladder sensitivity and decreased bladder capacity. Consequently, I (probably most people already know this): ø Avoid large volumes of fluid from early evening on (tea, caffeine, and wine are big offenders for me) ø Go to the bathroom before bed (duh) ø I just plan to get up once in the night whether or not I feel the urge. I don't dawdle, just go ø Hit the bathroom before I need to; I don't have the "not now" capacity I used to. ø Never pass up a bathroom (duh). ø Never get into a car without going to the bathroom (double duh) One thing about Ataxians that indirectly affects bladder control--we just don't move as fast as we used to, so we have to compensate using some anticipation, rather than shouting "Get out of my way!" Now THAT'S embarrassing. Tammy |

Tammy, When I plan on riding my trike I do not drink coffee. I made the mistake once. I could not hold it to the next rest stop. Water is fine but coffee is a killer. |

My father had urinary incontinence issues. I don't know if they were only from the ataxia because he had radiation for prostate cancer years before.
He wore Depends, and my mother always put a large pad under him when he went to bed for the night. As his ability to move decreased, my mother got a urinal for Dad to use so he wouldn't have to travel to the bathroom every time he had to void. He absolutely was better off not drinking alcohol.
Hope this helps some.
Blessings...

howdy sentient ,
the bladder is controled by a sphincter which is also a muscle....this muscle as with other muscles can become weaker with ataxia
the kidneys keep working together with a fluid reabsorption process during sleep , filling the bladder
google amitriptyline hydrochloride ( endep or other brand names )
this is a anti depression med but for reasons not fully understood stops or curtails this reabsorption process during sleep
used since 1961....so any contraindications are well known
Indication of Endep: Endep is used for:
•Major depression.
•Bed-wetting, urge incontinence.
•Adjunct in pain management.
Action of Endep: Tricyclic antidepressants (TCA's) exert their effects by inhibiting the re-uptake of noradrenaline and serotonin into presynaptic terminals.
you should do your own research and talk to your doc....this med sounds like it may be of help to you
and now for no particular reason i present my music offering of the evening

Hamachi, usually I go before I get on - but most of my routes do go by a public or park restroom. On longers rides, they are a BIG part of the route I take! Are you planning on riding with Kyle in his Nor Cal Ride Ataxia in May? http://www.ataxia.org/chapters/NorthTexas/default.aspx |

Spinner, I probably will not make it to Northern California because I am not familier with the route and rest stops. I will stick to my route on SART because I know where every rest stop is. |

Spinner, I sold my Catrike 700 because the seat angle (27 degrees) was getting uncomfortable for me. Here is the new trike I bought. http://getitbent.com go to trikes. I bought on Ebay and got a real good deal. The seat angle on this one is 55 degrees and is 10x more comfortable. |
