question Speech and Walking Problem (lvlady)
Posted: 3:06:37 pm on 2/3/2010 Modified: Never

About a year ago I started to have a walking and speech problem. Walking was off balance - the floor felt like it was coming to me. My speech problem is that when I speak I'm hesitant and words don't come out smoothly or with what I'm thinking. Anyone else have these issues? Brain neurologist said I had ataxia. Apparently no cure for it. It seems to be getting worse. Will my mobility and/or speech give out in a year, 2 years, or???

Ivlady,
Give Dr. Susan Perlman at UCLA Neurological group a e-mail she can help you. Sperlman@mednet.ucla.edu

Every Ataxia patient is different. My father walked for far longer than anyone could have predicted. He was an incredible optimist, and Mom and Dad together through sheer will, determination, and love managed to keep him going for years. We never had a specific diagnosis.

Also, call the NAF to order Dr. Perlman's book about Ataxia for $5 if you're so inclined. It's chock full of information and quite up to date.

Blassings...
