question Creating a Support Network (jem1910)
Posted: 10:33:36 pm on 2/6/2010 Modified: Never

I am in NC and finding that as my symptoms progress, I do not have an adequate support network (ie - no one). I don't want everything falling on my husbands shoulders. Where do I go to find that moral / emotional support necessary to cope with the stressors that come with this? Where do I go to get practical answers about what to expect, plan for, etc. I am feeling more and more isolated, and just can't seem to find the door ... or window? Suggestions on where the light switch is? ... You know how we are in the dark!! :-)

Hi Jem1910

Understand your dilemma ...and I feel similarly. And I happen to be a resident of your state ... in Asheville. Where might you be? We don't have a NAF chaapter in this area ... but if enuff folks from the local area get in touch with me, I'd be willing to put the energy into organizing a local support group. Ogie

Ask your neurologist if there are any support groups for Parkinson's Disease in your area. Although a different diagnosis, there are many similar emotional, social, physical, etc. issues. There seem to be more support groups for Parkinson's out there, and most if not all will welcome people with similar issues. You can also try contacting the closest Jewish Family Services group and ask for a recommendation(you don't have to be Jewish!). They helped my family.

Blessings...
