I thought I would comment on triking.
Many people mention the benefits of triking
The thing about triking is, you need a good place to trike. I live in San Francisco, one of the most crowed Urban areas in the country. (In all Urban areas it would seem difficult to bicycle.) It is politically correct to bicycle, but the geography and the physical engineering is against you. There are a lot of hills, first of all. Secondly, the city was laid out in the 1800’s or before, for horses, then truncated by freeways. When I was younger, hitching posts were common to see. Many of the streets and sidewalks are narrow. Many of the streets can hardly allow two modern cars in opposite directions, without one yielding. It was recently acknowledged by the Fire Dept., that San Francisco has some of the narrowest and steepest streets of any major city in the U.S.. Bike lanes were carved out at the expense of traffic lanes, making them narrower, where they exist. Bike lanes are not even contiguous. Most pleasure bicyclists transport their bicycles, by car, to parks, to enjoy riding them. Kind of defeats the ecological purpose
Bicycling on the streets is a daredevil sport. In 67+ yrs in the City I have never seen a trike, there simply isn’t room in the bike lanes to accommodate them, and there are too many vans legally parked at blind corners. In addition bicyclists, motorists and to a lesser extent pedestrians are at war. (Critical Mass) at; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_Mass
Bike trails are available in adjacent Marin or San Mateo counties, but you need to cross a bridge or go on a highway to get to either area.
Recumbent exercise bikes may be a second option, living space permitting.
Tiriking would seem to be a rural or Suburban experience.
Suggestions welcome.

I would get a trainer for a trike get in condition that way once you are in shape drive to a nice bike trail once in a while and enjoy the outdoors. What kind of car do you have and can you get around ok?
I am older than you at 69 end of March or am close in age and can trike ok. Triking helps me burn off the calories of trehalose.

The ONLY reason you haven't seen a recumbent trike is because I don't live there - I agree that most of the places that I ride are ... less challenging, but Dallas (Texas in general) is not really bike friendly. If it were easy, everybody would do it - and nothing about Ataxia is easy! For me it about the quality of life - I'd make a plan (like Hamachi's) to get out and visit the trails & parks - it is so worth the effort! Actually, for this city triker the more rural/suburban the more dangerouse triking seems to be/get. I lived in a real rural area - I know how people drive when they 'think' not many are around  http://www.ataxia.org/chapters/NorthTexas/default.aspx

if I lived elsewhere I would ride a trike, but Brooklyn, NY is not the place to ride for me. there is a memorial bike around the corner for a woman who was killed on her bike. the garbage truck never saw her. for now I'll ride my stationary bike.

Sandy,
Look up Trehalose on Yahoo search engine. It well tell you what the researcher found out. Please read website produced by Stanford students. The website is on HD but SCAs are close to HD. Trehalose prevents clumping or aggregation of protiens.

Do you know what type of ataxia you have? If you are interested in trying Trehalose let me know and I can tell you where to get it. It is not a prescription drug. I take 1 table spoon 3 times a day.

moilerner, God has blesses me with a good safe place to ride - I KNOW THAT! And it's a real good thing, because I'd much rather get hit by that garbage truck than ride INSIDE all the time - getting outside and being active IS one of the key reason I ride! Sandy, "Trehalose has not even undergone the first stage of clinical trials. Moreover, the positive effects seen in mice do not guarantee that it will work or even be completely safe in humans with HD.

There is no other treatment for DRPLA. If I do nothing I am sure to get dementia. The FDA considers Trehalose to be safe as a food product. So I have nothing to loose taking Trehalose. I up my dosage to what HDDW recommended 2 table spoons 3 times a day. I will report back in a few months on the results. I hope this Trehalose stops my ataxia progression. If not in heaven there is no ataxia.

Just so you (and others) make an informed decision. And I'm counting on "no Ataxia in heaven" also. And eventhough I know that God is in complete 100% controle of the rate & savarity of my ataxia, I'm responcible for my 'steps' (He directs them AND gives me the power to take 'all' of them, but I'm still acountable.
***You seem to be well informed and understand ... know what your doing/saying, but THAT is not the norm (I am constantly amazed how many doen't even use common sence.)

I hope you can make it to So. Cal. in Nov. I sure would like to meet you. I hope Kyle chooses SART to ride. Its only about one hour to UCLA Neurological Center.

Oldtimer, eventhough Triking has provided me with GREAT & Safe exercise, I see it as more of a way for me to "GET OUT" and do stuff. Pilateis has really made the BIGGEST change - I've been especially consistent with going to pilates once or twice a week for the past few months, and when I'm there I've been pushing very hard to do the movements correctly. I've been doing much, much better for the past few months and I think this is largely why. Not only does it help your core muscles (which you need a lot more than you may think), but it's helped my concentration and stamina as well.

For example, there's this horrible, horrible, move that was vomited up from the bowels of Hell to torture people. It's called a Full Side Plank (here's a picture of some chick doing it: http://www.mindfulmovementllc.com/web/mindfulmovement/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Side-Plank-300x272.jpg).

This move may feel impossible, even for "normals", but I've been trying to work my way up to it for some time, and I can now hold it for about 20 seconds at a time on each side.

Knowing that I could do this with SCA, where many "normal" people in good shape with good balance cannot, made me see that focus and practice can make you realize goals that seem impossible.

And seriously I haven't been losing my balance much. I've been feeling more comfortable standing up unassisted and I haven't been as tired in the evenings. I really think pilates has been helping on several levels.
