CENTRAL TIME ZONE
Urinary symptoms are frequently experienced in individuals with Ataxia and may arise from nervous system changes or primary urological issues such as prostate enlargement (in men) or pelvic organ prolapse (in women). While these symptoms can be disruptive and impact quality of life, they rarely lead to kidney damage.
The type of bladder dysfunction varies by condition. For example, urinary retention is more common in Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), Friedreich’s Ataxia, and Xeroderma Pigmentosum, but less so in Spinocerebellar Ataxias (SCAs). The presentation highlights the importance of a personalized treatment plan and introduces the NEUROGED guidelines—a practical framework developed by EAN, EFAS, and INUS for managing lower urinary tract dysfunction in neurological disorders.
