What Are the Most Common Ways to Give a DNA Sample?

Since our DNA is in every single cell of our body, there are many ways to provide a DNA sample for genetic testing. The genetic test most appropriate for you will have requirements on what types of samples are suitable for the test. It’s essential to follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider to ensure accurate and reliable results.

The most used sample types include:

  • Buccal – swabbing the inside of your cheek
  • Saliva – spitting in a tube
  • Blood- getting your blood drawn or your finger pricked

Amniotic fluid may be used for women who are pregnant. Skin punch biopsy is used if you’ve had a blood transfusion or bone marrow transplant. Rarely, muscle biopsy may be utilized in specific cases.

Do not worry, your genetic counselor will inform you of the best way to provide your DNA sample for your genetic test.
