Accessible Products for Summer with Day Undefined

Guest Author: Ellie Martin

Summer is here! I’ve put together a list of products that might be particularly useful during this time of year. Many of these products have been suggested and reviewed by Day Undefined, a website of everyday products for accessible living. All of the products that they share are reviewed by people in the disability community and include real photos and videos. But the other products are my own recommendations.

1. Cold brew mason jar coffee maker

“This product saves money and uses room-temperature water. After I got a bad burn from using a french press, I looked into making cold brew. This system is very easy to use, makes a bunch of coffee, and does not involve boiling water. Cold brew is also very tasty,” says Liam, co-founder of Day Undefined. You can read his blog about how he makes coffee here: https://dayundefined.com/blogs/news/all-about-coffee-making

2. Cooling towel

I had one of these towels in college and it was great for cooling down after walking in the heat all day. Whether you’re at the beach, hiking, or working outside, this towel will keep you cool and refreshed. It is very easy to use – just wet the towel and shake to activate it.

3. Travel foot rest

You might travel more comfortably with a foot rest that can provide support during a long car ride or flight, giving your legs and lower-back a break. Ericka says this might be helpful for people with circulation problems. Read her review here: https://dayundefined.com/products/travel-foot-rest

4. Crossbody bag

Lisa says, “As you can see from my photos, this bag is much bigger than my usual little credit card purse. So I was able to carry a lot more with me right at my disposal and safely around my body. It is helpful for me to have what I need close to me on a trip by myself. It shows no evidence of wear and tear in being used for that one week trip. It’s quite good quality, in my opinion.” You can read more in her travel blog: https://dayundefined.com/blogs/news/lets-travel-plan-an-accessible-train-trip-with-lisa or check out the product review here: https://dayundefined.com/products/crossbody-bag

5. Sunscreen

Is it difficult to use standard “squeeze” sunscreen bottles? There are many different ways to put on sunscreen, so consider trying roll on applicators, spray bottles, or sunscreen sticks while searching for the one that works for you.

6. Gardening gloves

Gardening is a great hobby. Karen, one of Day Undefined’s team members, recommends gardening gloves to protect your hands. Rose gloves are longer to prevent skin picks and keep your arms safer. Of course, there are many styles of gloves available to consider.

7. Hands free neck fan

The Gaiatop portable neck fan can provide hands free cooling for those hot summer days. It has three different modes so you can choose how much air you want. I haven’t tried it, but it seems like an ideal companion for your traveling.

This product was a suggestion and was not reviewed yet.

8. Water shoes

I think that water shoes are great for the beach or pool. They are comfortable and prevent injury on the foot. They can also help with walking across slippery surfaces.

9. Camping lantern

Karen uses this lantern during power outages. It is very easy to transport and has 360 degree bright light. Most notably, this lantern turns on by simply pulling it out – no buttons necessary, unless you choose to use the flashlight or emergency light functions.
