When Mark Minkin signed up for Xtreme Hike, he wasn’t just taking on a mountain. He was taking on a challenge that would honor his wife and help raise awareness for everyone living with Ataxia.
Along the way, he discovered something even bigger.
“The views were spectacular, the encouragement from others, and knowing that I raised money and awareness…not only for my wife, but others suffering from this disease.”

“It was an AMAZING experience… and the sense of accomplishment of doing something I have never done.”

How It Works
This challenge is for advocates, family members, caregivers, community supporters, and anyone ready to push themselves for families affected by Ataxia.
Xtreme Hike will take place from October 8-11, 2026. A team of up to 26 hikers will take on the Grand Canyon together.
Each participant commits to raising $10,000 to support NAF’s mission. NAF and the professional guide company will provide:
- Fundraising support
- A professional training plan
- Experienced guides during the hike
- Hotel accommodations
- Transportation
- A community cheering you on every step of the way
